A Cuckoo at Amwell, 27th April 2023

Migration has been fairly slow this year and while a Cuckoo had been heard a week or so ago I had not managed to see one. I believe it is the same bird who has been coming here for at least four years and I call him Cuthbert! He prefers the lower reaches of the Ash Valley  and then ventures into the reserve. A walk over the fields was in order and timed to see the Bluebells flourishing.

A calling Nuthatch drew my attention and I managed a fairly distant shot.

Common Whitethroats are now back and calling but staying fairly concealed as this individual proved!

Whilst Red Kites are an every day sight now, I still can't resist taking pictures, especially when one comes down this low.

I managed to get some shots of this Jay which was focussed on feeding.

And finally, the star! Cuthbert was spotted on the wires and then dropped down to feed. I managed to creep closer as he was engrossed in finding worms and managed some shots.

And a final shot after he had finished off his worm.

Such a thrill to have him back!
