Waxwings in Hertford - 15th December 2023

There has been a large Waxwing invasion this year from Scandinavia with birds mainly along the East coast but gradually moving inland. Hertfordshire recently had a few birds at Berkhampstead and Stevenage. On the 14th, three birds were spotted in Wickes car park, Hertford early afternoon. The same spot they favoured in January 2019. The weather was dull by the time I got there so just the one shot posted here.

The weather for the following day showed sun in the morning, but would they still be there? At just after 8am two birds (one adult, one 1st Winter) were in the tree above the recycling cabin. They would then fly in to a nearby Sorbus tree to feed. Sadly, the forecasters got it wrong and it stayed dull and cloudy for pictures.

A great couple of hours and good to see so many friendly and familiar faces! A few of the people passing through and using the Health Club, were very confused with all of the gathered birders, but it was great to share these very special birds.
